Abstract

The rise in global antibiotic resistance is a significant concern, further intensified by the increasing prevalence of organisms that form biofilms. Biofilms are highly organised communities of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, comprising a mixture of strains forming a slimy extracellular matrix of extracellular polymeric substances. They could be found on biotic and abiotic surfaces. Infections associated with biofilms have been reported to be linked to treatment failure, increased cost of treatment, prolonged hospital stay and increased morbidity and mortality. The biofilm serves as a protective shield for organisms in the matrix, making them highly resistant to antibiotics, disinfectants, mechanical fluctuations, and immune response. This review aims to describe the process of its formation, clinical implications, methods of detection and preventive strategies.
